With anti-immigrant sentiment on the rise, surveillance
of immigrants has become common including in labour markets. Such
surveillance is so normalized that it is not recognized as such,
especially when used by employers. Using intersectionality theory,
Carieta explores how pre-employment screening impacts the lives and
employment choices of undocumented/illegalized Caribbean women
careworkers in Canada and the U.S. The presentation will also provide
insights on the challenges and strategies for conducting research with a
vulnerable immigrant population, particularly during the COVID-19
pandemic.
Bio:Carieta Thomas is a PhD Candidate in
the Department of Sociology at the University of Calgary. Carieta is a
2019-2020 recipient of the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship and the
Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship. She received a JD from New England Law with a specialization in immigration law, and an MA in Pan African Studies from Syracuse University. Carieta’s current PhD research connects her immigration law background with the sociology of care work.
