Dr. Indra Narang is the Associate Chair in Faculty Development, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in the Department of
Pediatrics, HSC, Toronto. In her role as Associate Chair, Dr. Narang and her team have developed an EDI champion network
and an Allyship program to increase awareness and address microaggressions, harassment and discrimination to enhance
inclusivity in the healthcare environment.
Dr. Brett Schrewe is a consultant general pediatrician and medical education researcher based in Victoria. At UBC, he is a
clinical assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics. He is a member of the CPS First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Health
Committee and a 2017 Trudeau Scholar. He works and lives on the traditional territory of the WSÁNEĆ peoples, specifically on lands governed by one of the 14 Vancouver Island (Douglas) treaties, the Saanich (South) treaty of 7 February 1852.
This two-part presentation will first draw upon an overview of hospitality to consider why some patients and learners may feel unwelcome in the vulnerable spaces of patient care and clinical education. It will then proceed with an in-depth exploration of allyship as a practice by which health care providers may render these environments more broadly welcoming and supportive, and in turn, contribute to realizing institutional and societal desires for full expressions of equity, diversity, and inclusion in the health care system.
