Stephanie A. Atkinson, PhD, DSc (Hon) is Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Special Professional Staff in McMaster Children’s Hospital. Her Pediatrics roots began as a Clinical Dietitian-Nutritionist at SickKids Hospital, followed by a PhD at the University of Toronto in nutrition in premature infants and post-doctoral training in the Research Institute, both at SickKids. As a nutrition clinician-scientist her current research focuses on development origins of health and disease (DOHaD) exploring nutrition and lifestyle factors during fetal and early life that play a role in defining the offspring phenotype.
Elyanne Ratcliffe, MD, is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics in the Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship in the field of neurogastroenterology at Columbia University, New York. As a physician-scientist, her translational research program is based on her combined clinical experience and research interests in the developmental programming and function of the gut-brain axis.
Sandeep Raha, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and the Chair of Admissions for the Graduate Programme in Medical Sciences. He completed is doctoral work at U of T and post-doctoral training in mitochondrial physiology and diagnostics at the Hospital for Sick Children. His current research focuses on early life exposure to cannabinoids impacts fetal and post-natal development.
Andrea Cross, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Scientist at CanChild. She completed her PhD and post-doctoral fellowship in the School of Rehabilitation Science at McMaster University and was supervised by Department of Pediatrics Faculty members (Drs. Rosenbaum and Gorter). Her research interests are in patient-oriented research and implementation science in the field of child health.
In this week's core session of Grand Rounds, they will explore how graduate student experiences in the Department of Pediatrics benefit students and faculty supervisors and ultimately impacts on child health research with perspectives from a seasoned professor, a clinician sub-specialist, a basic scientist and a recent graduate trainee now faculty member. Learned strategies for recruiting graduate students with an interest in child health research will be shared.
