Arguments about how causal qualitative and quantitative research are “usually” or “mostly” done abound. In our workshop, we summarize the results of a review of 180 quantitative and qualitative articles focusing on key research tasks such as conceptualization and case selection. We conclude that the reality of empirical research is more complex and diverse than the “two cultures” tale suggests, particularly in qualitative research.

Ingo Rohlfing is a Professor of Methods of Empirical Social Research at the University of Passau. His primary research and teaching interests are social science methods with an emphasis on causal inference, qualitative and multimethod research, and research transparency and credibility.
