ELLs in the Classroom: Best Practices for Assessment
From Alanna Carter
MacPherson Institute and MELD/MODEL have partnered to offer a series of 3 workshops intended to increase understanding of who English language learners (ELLs) are on campus, ensure educators are meeting the learning needs of ELLs, and assist educators in designing assessments for student success.
In the third workshop, ‘ELLs in the Classroom: Assessment Design’ we examine strategies for designing assessments that are accessible, fair, and equitable in the context of ELLs. This includes assignment and exam design practices that account for the unique needs of ELLs such as reading speed and written instructions. Additionally, academic integrity as it relates to cultural and linguistic differences is discussed. The voices and experiences of McMaster ELLs are represented in the workshop to ground ideas in real world experiences.
