In this talk, Shaonta' Allen shares findings from her PhD dissertation on the individual experiences of religion of Black Christian Millenials. She identifies the experience of tension young Black Christians feel between their race, their faith, and the current political climate. Her work adds a person-centered approach to the scholarly study of the Black Church.
Bio:
Shaonta’
Allen completed her PhD in the Department of Sociology at the University of
Cincinnati (Cincinnati, OH, USA) in 2021. She has been named a P.E.O. International
Scholar, a Southern Regional Education Board Scholar, and she received the
African-American Cultural Heritage Action Fund Research Fellowship. Her
research examines how Black resistance to racial inequality varies across
social institutions. She specifically explores Black resistive practices within
Religion, Higher Education, and Pop-Culture & Sport to theorize
contemporary strategies for navigating racial and gendered hierarchies. She currently works at Dartmouth College.
