Dr. Guido Filler is a Professor of Paediatrics at Western University with cross-appointments to Medicine and Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. He obtained his medical degree and PhD in clinical pharmacology in Germany, did a post-doc in London, UK, became division chief of nephrology at CHEO in 1999 and chair/chief of the department of paediatrics at Western in 2006.
He published over 350 scientific publications in PubMed including the Lancet and Nature Reviews Nephrology and has been cited over 10,000 times. His research interests include ontogeny of drug disposition, kidney transplantation, chronic kidney disease and kidney stones. In his spare time, he creates LEGO structures with up to 21,000 bricks.
In this session of Grand Rounds, he discusses sodium intake of children and adolescents which has increased from 300 to 3700 mg/day from 1970, resulting in shorter life expectancy and preventable multiple non-communicable diseases. The presentation includes the visualization of tissue sodium in the skin, muscle and kidneys.
