This project aims to develop an advanced ex-vivo mechanical testing device to simulate multi-axial cyclic loading on cadaveric sterna, replicating the loads and dynamics experienced during breathing. The goal of this work is to improve the assessment of novel sternal closure methods following a median sternotomy, providing a validation framework for the deployment of devices with improved patient outcomes. Team members include Kansas Mackay, Emilie Kuepper, Elise Schwarz, and Bridget Latka. We would like to express our
gratitude to our advisors, Dr. Wohl, Dr. McDonald, Dr. Xu, and Dr. Quenneville,
for their continued support throughout this project. Our thanks also go to the
staff at the Mechanical Undergraduate Project Laboratories for their valuable
guidance and assistance.
