In
this talk, Dr. Nelson will discuss the alignment between machine
learning and qualitative methods. Dr. Nelson will illustrate this
alignment by using machine learning, specifically word embeddings,
combined with a qualitative research design to analyze intersectional
experiences of the nineteenth century U.S. South.
Bio:
Dr. Laura K. Nelson is an assistant professor of sociology at the
University of British Columbia. She was previously an assistant
professor at Northwestern University, where she was core faculty at
NULab for Texts, Maps, and Networks, was affiliated with the Network
Science Insitutute, and was on the executive committee of the Women's
Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program. She has published in outlets
such as the American Journal of Sociology, Gender and Society, and Sociological Methods & Research.
