Dr. Kevan Mehta is a pediatric respirologist and an assistant professor at McMaster University. He completed his undergraduate medical training in the United Kingdom before returning to Canada to complete his general pediatrics residency, followed by an allergy fellowship, and sleep medicine as well as their asthma fellowship at the Hospital for the Children in Toronto. Ontario. He has since practiced as a respirologist with special expertise in sleep, medicine, and home ventilation. He has a very strong passion for medical education, and is currently completing a masters in health science education. Additionally, his research interests focus on studying the effective use of diagnostics and technology as well as virtual, the virtual care and remote monitoring in patients with sleep disorder breathing.
Dr. Reshma Amin is the Director of the Sleep Medicine and Long-term Ventilation (LTV) Programs at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. She is a Clinician Investigator and Associate Professor at the SickKids Research Institute and University of Toronto. She is lead author for the Canadian Guidelines for Pediatric Long-term Mechanical Ventilation at home. She also has more than 120 peer-reviewed publications. Her research program is funded by CIHR, Muscular Dystrophy Canada and Cure SMA Canada.
In this week's session of Grand Rounds, Dr. Amin explains the rationale and implementation of a virtual care approach in the home mechanical ventilation population in Ontario, discusses the development process of a research project to evaluate this, looks at and analyzes some of the data generated so far and reviews some of the triumphs and challenges in using virtual care in this population, and the lessons it may have for other pediatric patients.
