Xutong Zhang was a CIHR postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, McMaster University, and a member of the STRoNG Families Team working with Dr. Andrea Gonzalez. She is currently an incoming Assistant Professor at the School of Psychology and Cognitive Science, East China Normal University. Xutong obtained her Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies at The Pennsylvania State University in 2021. Her work focuses on the psychophysiological mechanisms underlying parental emotion regulation and parenting behaviors, as well as the micro-dynamics of parent-child coregulation. She is interested in applying this work to the evaluation of parenting-focused prevention and intervention programs.
In this developmental pediatrics academic hour session, Xutong provides an overview of how different patterns of parental emotion regulation (ER) may support or interfere with appropriate parenting. Based on a recent systematic review, she also summarizes how studies have assessed parental ER in parenting contexts and summarize the results from two studies adopting a multi-method approach to modelling dynamic ER processes in the challenging moments of parenting.
