Jaleesa Bygrave is a registered social worker who has a
breadth of experience working in the areas of child welfare, primary health
care, corrections, health promotion, and community development. She is a
seasoned clinician with extensive experience providing culturally affirming
mental health services, both in individual and group contexts. Chandan Preet is a registered psychotherapist and has
extensive experience practicing individual and group therapy across a diverse
range of settings and populations including children, youth and adults in
schools, shelters, addiction treatment, community health and harm reduction
centres. As a first-generation immigrant, she is passionate about supporting
racialized communities with culturally grounded, inclusive, client-centred and
trauma-informed care. In this session of Grand Rounds, Jaleesa and Chandan highlight the
challenges of Black, Indigenous, racialized children and youth that led to the
inception of a specialized community-based mobile program. The YouThrive
Program offers mental health services that are culturally responsive and
affirming of the reality of racism and other forms of oppression. They take a
closer look at the myriad of barriers that Black, Indigenous, racialized
children, youth, and families face while accessing mental health services. By drawing from their
journeys and experiences in community settings, the speakers discuss
existing gaps and steps their program is taking to address these gaps. Jaleesa and Chandan discuss the positive impact of culturally responsive mental health interventions that are tailored for children and youth who identify as black, indigenous, and racialized.
